Dear Family and Friends,

I need to share some bad news with you. I just found out I have tongue cancer. It is pretty shocking. I have had a sore throat for 5 months and have been trying to get to the bottom of this and did after 4 visits to the doctor. The cancer is called squamous cell carcinoma and it was determined it is not from smoking, they can actually test for that.

My case was put before a tumor board at Kaiser and it was determined today that surgery is not an option and I would be treated with radiation and chemotherapy.

There is allot to absorb, I have to do a number of things next week before they start treatment, like have a dental exam, hearing test, attend a 3 hour class to go over what to expect, nutrition and so on.

I have only shared this with immediate family members and some friends, this all started last Thursday and I have just learned about treatment today. It is daunting to discuss this with everyone, I will do so in time.I am sorry to send this in an email, this has been very emotional and this is the best way for me to communicate at the moment.

I hope you understand.I will call when I can, and keep you up to date.

Love,
John
