The journey started in 2014 when John was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Challenged with trying to control the pain and keeping active he chose to retire early. In December 2016, he was hospitalized with acute liver failure. This led to a trip to Mayo to try and get on the liver transplant list. The only "cure" for PSC. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, liver cancer in the bile ducts.
