John suffered a severe head injury after falling from his deer stand on deer opener. He was assisted by Nathan, Steve and Mary Barthel (Mike’s children) until EMT's arrived on the scene. Being deep in the woods complicated the process, but he was eventually transported to Bemidji where he was prepped and stabilized. Due to inclement weather he was then transported by ambulance to Essentia Health in Duluth.
