Joey was diagnosed with scoliosis when he was 10. He has been monitored by an orthopedic to track the growth of his curve. About a year ago we noticed his curve was getting more severe due to a growth spurt. He has been wearing a brace to slow the growth and correct his curve. Unfortunately, his curve continued to get worse despite wearing the brace. This past October the doctor measured him at 62 degree curve and told us surgery was the only option at this point. Over the period of 6 months his curve grew 20 degrees. The doctor suggested not waiting until summer to correct his curve because it was progressing so rapidly.
Joey has an "S" curve with a rib rotation meaning that the "hump" on his back is actually his ribs twisting in his body which can cause organ problems later in his life.
The doctor assures us that he will be able to correct Joey's curve using rods during the spinal fusion surgery. This correction will make Joey at least 2 inches taller immediately. Joey is allowed to set up his hospital room like his own while he is recovering. He would love to display posters with words of encouragement from his friends and family on the walls. Joey is an amazing friend, son, and big brother. He strives to be the best he can be every day at school and home. He loves Spiderman, science fiction, and technology. He is set on becoming a mechanical engineer when he finishes school.
