On Wednesday, February 12, 2020, Jim went to the Minneapolis Heart Institute, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, for a procedure to repair a heart valve. The repair was successful, and Jim planned to stay one night and then head home on Thursday afternoon. On Thursday morning February 13, Jim had a thoracentesis, a procedure to drain fluid from around the lungs (fluid that had built up because the heart valve had been leaking). During or just after the procedure, there was a complication that caused bleeding into his chest cavity. His blood pressure dropped precipitously, and the nurses and doctors spent a few hours figuring out what was happening and working to stabilize him. Jim spent 3 days under deep sedation, and woke up on Sunday, February 16. Then began the long process of healing and rehabilitation.
This site will provide occasional updates about Jim's condition and progress. We appreciate all of your support, prayers, good thoughts, and positive energy!
