Jim had his third major stroke on January 24, 2022. He initially went to his local hospital in Warren, PA before being transferred via ambulance to UPMC-Hamot Hospital in Erie, PA that evening. As a result of this stroke, he lost most of his ability to speak. He was still able to say a few words, and he could write a few words and numbers.
He had surgery to address plaque in his left carotid artery on January 27th. He suffered a complication during the procedure, but the neurosurgeon was confident that time spent in an in-patient rehab center could address any weaknesses that resulted from the surgical complication experienced. Although the surgery was going to mean that Jim had only a 3% chance of having another stroke, he had another one that evening. He was in ICU after surgery, and he remained there for 5 days before being transferred to a room in the step-down unit of the hospital. Unfortunately, he became dehydrated and his electrolytes became improperly balanced. He began to decline and to be less responsive. He was transferred back to the ICU on February 3rd. We thought we were losing him that evening. He remained unresponsive, and he was put on a ventilator in order to protect his airway. His electrolytes were closely monitored, and they began to improve on February 4th. He began showing signs of alertness on February 5th, and he opened one eye and tracked appropriately that morning.
