As some of you already know, my sister, Jill is in the hospital near her home in Raleigh after going to the emergency room for sudden severe abdominal pain. While they got her pain under control, they unexpectedly saw abnormal cells in her blood work. She was transferred to UNC Hospital Chapel Hill on Thursday, April 1st, where, after extensive diagnostic tests, they have diagnosed Jill with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The plan is she will get an indwelling catheter Sunday, a bone marrow biopsy on Monday, and she will start chemo Tuesday, which will last for 7-8 days. She will then have recovery for 2 to 3 weeks where they will continue to keep her in the hospital. She will unfortunately lose her hair and will feel the full effects of the chemo in that second week. She may be able to have visitors after the third week when her white blood cells come back up. Their hope is that this treatment will knock back the tumor cells significantly but they will reassess her at the end of the month. She may need a second round or they may opt for another type of therapy based on the bone marrow at that point. She is strong and healthy otherwise. They are optimistic. Stay positive! Love, sister Susan, husband Parker, and daughter Grace ❤️❤️❤️ Susan Westmoreland
