She was saved through prayer after a presumed miscarriage, was faced with a D&C when Carrie requested one last ultrasound to be sure. And there was Jenna's heart, beating loud and clear @ 10 weeks old. Born May 31, 2006, Jenna is the kind of kid that reminds her parents how kindness is defined.


Fast forward to May 10 of 2019 when Jenna was winding down her 6th grade year at Southwest Middle School and came down with what seemed to be strep throat, with mild concern for mononucleosis. Treated aptly with antibiotics, responded well enough to return to school with no fever or overt symptoms of strep, but was still low on energy. A week later, after trying to tough it out for her 13th birthday party (that WILL happen later), symptoms prompted another look. And we pray June 3, 2019 will end up the most terrifying day of Jenna's and our lives. A swift diagnosis of likely Acute Lymphoid Leukemia involving the team of PA Nodia, on call Dr. Mueller and the Black Hills Pediatrics team followed by Dr. Hill and Regional Hospital ER department team and finally the life flight team landed Jenna in stable condition under the care of Dr. Wagner and the Sanford Children's team. All this in time to begin further blood work at a children's specialty hospital less than 20 hours later. Cannot thank this group of professionals from multiple disciplines enough.


*For those of you who know Jenna, the following will not surprise you. That which you read above or read below will NOT be a story of a family gutting it out and overcoming leukemia. There is no way that Jesse and Carrie teamed could do it, even with the best friends and family in the world--which they have. (If you are reading this, that's you.) No, this WILL be a story of Jesus THE OVERCOMER. Our Jenna IS the fruit of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This girl's surely not earned what she's about to receive, and this "real struggle" Jenna is about to embark upon is not fair to her. But Jenna and all associated with this story will glorify Jesus as THE REASON God's family (you are part of that family) will grow closer together, lean in and think eternally, not carnally as a result of watching this young lady overcome this adventure with the same grace and elegance that she has and will carry herself with since the beginning. If Jenna is to handle this, it will be because Jenna is of Jesus.
