Jeff Thompson Jeff's Cancer Fight

First post: Nov 27, 2016 Latest post: Nov 30, 2016
Jeff was diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney cancer in July 2016. He had been feeling pretty awful for a few months and we thought it was just a shoulder injury. Eventually he became very ill and we took him into emergency at Hoag. That's when our fight with cancer began. They told us that it had eaten through 3 of his ribs already and that they need to do biopsies to find out exactly what type of cancer it was. We tried 6 weeks of chemo and radiation therapy. So far the treatment has not worked. He's on a limited diet and has left his work. He has been spending most of his time at the house and going to multiple doctors appointments. He's on heavy duty pain medication to manage his pain.

A bit about his type of cancer
Jeff has what is called Renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer that offers a survival rate (5 years) of about 8% Stage 4 is the most advanced form of the disease. Stage 4 means that the cancer has metastasized to the lymph system or other organs. Because the adrenal gland is attached to the kidney, the cancer often spreads there first. Stage 4 kidney cancer also means that the cancer may have spread into more than one lymph node near the kidney or elsewhere in the body.
