Good Day family and friends of Jarrod (Mike) Thieling! Thank you for visiting his CaringBridge page. This is Jody, his sister. When we were kids, I lovingly nicknamed him “Mikey-likes-it” which, in his adult life, stuck as “Mike”. Most of you know him as Jarrod, so that’s how I will try to remember to refer to him!

Jarrod is currently 45 years old and was recently diagnosed with stage 1B Pancreatic cancer. He noticed his skin and eyes had taken on a yellow color and got into the doctor that afternoon. Once the tests came back with some questionable results, they sent him to the ER, leading to a largely unnecessary night in the hospital. Several days later, he had a scope done and they inserted a stent to hold open the bile duct. The doctor who did this was very concerned about the tumor that was pressing on the bile duct. They did a biopsy and the results were cancer. A week or so later, he had a scan and they determined it was stage 1B – the size of the tumor determined the stage, a little larger than 2cm I believe, but, thankfully, it had not spread at all.

Fast forward a few weeks, he has gotten his port placed and has had 2 of 12 chemo treatments. He goes in every other Tuesday for several hours, then follows it up with 40 hours of at home pump chemo. There is a possibility they could change the type of chemo during the process. They will do a check-in at the 3 month mark to gauge how things are going. The plan is to have the Whipple surgery at the end of the 6 months. We haven’t thought too much about the Whipple at this point, but we know it has quite a recovery.

Needless to say, this will be a long road. Jarrod’s ability to work could be affected at some point, and he will surely have medical bills that won’t be covered in full. In addition, the new benefits year will hit mid-point, so a new round of deductibles. We’ve started a GoFundMe. You can visit that here: https://gofund.me/75b26e46

Please keep Jarrod in your thoughts and prayers. Reach out to him occasionally with a funny story, well wishes, or to have a conversation about whatever you usually chat with him about! We are very grateful for your support, love, and friendship for Jarrod!
