Flashback to 2017... One day Janice was experiencing severe back pain from what she thought was due to recent back surgery. The pain was so bad it led her to the ER. While the doctors were trying to find the source of her pain they found a small spot on her outer right lung. Further testing confirmed, and on July 20, 2017, Janice was first diagnosed with cancer [Adenocarcinoma of the right lung, stage 1]. Her medical team took swift action and on July 25, 2017 they successfully removed a small portion of her lung that contained the tumor. She did not require any chemotherapy or radiation. She did however, have to return every six months for routine CT scans to ensure the cancer didn’t come back.

Flash-forward to 2019… While getting one of her routine CT scans on February 25th, her doctor discovered several spots. Not just on her lung, but also on her kidney and liver. More tests were needed. Janice went on to get a PET scan and on April 1st (no fooling), we were told that her cancer was back and had spread. More tests were needed. A biopsy was performed to determine the type of cancer and an MRI to rule out spots on her brain (all clear). On April 15th, Janice was officially diagnosed with [Adenocarcinoma of the lung, stage 4].

Adenocarcinoma: is a form of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type.
Stage 4: the cancer has spread (metastasized) to other regions of the body.
