James' family has a long history of prostate cancer so we expected we may have to deal with it sooner or later.

Mid September James went in to have a baseline PSA  test (Prostate-specific antigen - a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland). Typically a healthy number for someone his age would be between 2 and 4. His was 9.3. The doctor recommend a biopsy, which he had early October. Two days later, the doctor called to confirm it was prostate cancer and insisted on a bone scan and CT scan to see if it had spread. The following week we met with the doctor to go over the results. It is an aggressive form (3-4 on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most aggressive) and has already spread to 55% of the prostate.

Radiation or chemo is not recommended since it would make it extremely difficult to do surgery if it doesn't work. We will be scheduling the surgery to be done within the next 2 months tops. Recovery will be a month or 2 off work and very light duty at home.

FYI, there have been a few people asking about donations. The "honor James with a donation" link makes a donation to Caring Bridge to help keep this site free of charge for those wishing to use it. I did start a GoFundMe page for those wishing to donate directly to us. We aren't asking for monetary donations, but if you feel the urge, we will put it towards our co-pays and any other out of pocket expenses. Any donations are unexpected and greatly appreciated. Thank you!!! ❤
