Welcome to our CaringBridge website for Hudson! As you all know by now, Hudson was diagnosed with Left-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (from here on out forever referred to as CDH) at our 16 week ultrasound appointment. CDH is a rare birth defect where the diaphragm does not form or close completely at 8 weeks gestation, and this allows the abdominal organs to push into the chest cavity hindering proper lung formation. There is currently no known cause for CDH.
CDH is a life-threatening pathology and the national survival average is about 50% overall, and occurs in 1 out of every 2500 infants. These are very scary numbers, but we have chosen a leading hospital (Columbia NY Presbyterian) that specializes in pulmonary issues and has a level 3 NICU, with much higher survival rates and everything Hudson could ever need, including an AMAZING team of doctors and nurses.
Hudson was born on January 22nd, 2017 at 1:10 am. He is gorgeous and strong, and he survived the first few crucial days after being stabilized by the team, and received surgery on the 25th of January to repair the CDH. This is just the beginning of his journey to recovery, but we are amazed that at his strength and are optimistic that he is on his way to being a healthy and happy little boy!
We want to use this site to keep our family and friends updated on Hudson's progress and the goings-on of the Powers family. We appreciate your support, prayers, and encouragement more than we can describe. We will try to pop in and update you all as often as we can! Feel free to share this site with family and friends that are interested in knowing what's going on with our little dude. :)
