Early in 2020, Helena began experiencing some medical issues that caused concern. She began undergoing a series of tests and exploratory/diagnostic surgeries in an effort to find out what was really going on. Fast forward to July of 2020, when she posted to her Facebook page that she was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma aka bile duct cancer. Knowing she had a tough road ahead of her, Helena put on her bravest smile and began her treatments to kick cancer's butt!
In December, her CT result was improved and the oncologist discontinued one of her chemo's immediately. Always the optimist, Helen posted that she was on her way to normal. However on New Years Eve when she went for a chemo treatment, she was in immense pain and was sent directly to the ER. Tests revealed that she had developed bloodclots--one in each groin area and one in each lung. Helena was admitted to the hospital and blood thinners were started immediately. On Sunday, January 3, she had developed some GI bleeding and it was suggested she have a colonoscopy. Electing to decline the colonoscopy, she was released from the hospital on Monday, January 4th and sent home under hospice care where she continues to fight like the rock star that she is!
Many of you have asked what you can do for her and the family. Please be prayerful. The power of prayer is so mighty! She is at peace with what's going on and knows God holds her.
Additionally, when she began her journey back in the summer, she posted for those wanting to do something: " If you are willing and able, please go donate blood. We as a nation are critically low."
