Heidi von Schmertzing Blackwood is one of the most thoughtful, generous, gracious people many of us have ever known. In the past two years, her beautiful eyes, contagious laugh, and unbeatable smile have on many occasions blessed us all even while her own body was battling health issues – some known and some unknown. In the process of trying to sort through those issues, she met every challenge with a cheery determination (even when she fell into the 1% who reacted to those medical tests in ways that differed from the norm). At the beginning of the month of February and at her request, her southern most family escorted her to Pensacola to see numerous doctors and incur multiple diagnostic procedures that led her to refer laughingly to herself as a human pincushion. On a routine outing for one of these procedures, she suddenly had what we now know was a stroke. Today (2/26/17) she is six days out from the initial trauma and those of us who know her best see that Heidi-smile saying, “I got this.” She has a long way to go – her brain still needs to drain excess fluid, her clot still needs to dissipate, and her body still needs to beat the odds. We are believing in God’s power, your prayers, and Heidi’s determination.
