Harvey Humes

In May of 2017 Harvey was diagnosed with MDS (Myeloidysplastic Sydrome)    MDS is a cancer in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature and therefore do not become healthy blood cells.   When Harvey was diagnosed his "blast cells" (bad cells) were at 18%.  They are now at approximately 40%, which puts him into AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia).  Unfortunately, this is a fast growing cancer.


Harvey has had 3-types of chemotherapy to combat his cancer, none of which have responded or put his cancer into remission.  Harvey was also diagnosed with a gene mutation (TP-53) which is very resistant and does not respond to many treatment options for AML.  Due to the AML, Harvey's neutrophils (component of blood that fights infection) are at "0".  He has NO RESISTANCE to fight off any infection.  He wears a mask when in public, uses lots of hand sanitizer and Clorox  wipes! 


If you know Harvey, you are aware of his positive attitude towards everything.  He has gone into this battle very positive, optimistic, and willing to do what he needs to beat this disease.


At this point in time, Harvey is receiving platelet infusions Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week.  He also receives blood transfusions as needed.  These transfusions help combat fatigue and energy levels.   He receives his treatment at U of M Masonic Cancer Center.  He is under the care of Dr. Erica Warlick, M.D., at UofM.  She is a top doctor in the Midwest for MDS.  We are blessed to have found her and Harvey knows he is getting the best care possible.


All of the nurses at the Clinic are Angels.  They enjoy Harvey thoroughly.  They bring him his warm blankets, apple juice and Lorna Doone cookies!


This has been challenging for our family, but we are secure in knowing God will take care of Harvey.  Harvey has the BEST attitude and trusts in God.
