In January 2017, Grady noticed back pain on flight to Hailey to visit the family there. He rested but was able to visit the grandkids and take a short cross country ski. That winter we spent 4 and 6 weeks in Chandler enjoying the sun, limited golf and friends - - all the while treating and problem-solving his back pain. He worked with PT, tried massage and thai massage, acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments while also consulting his physician back on Bainbridge. He had no appetite and lost weight. He was on muscle relaxants, naproxen, hydrocodone and eventually taking x-ray, MRI and CT scan. In May, his primary care physician was able to find malignancy on pancreas and refer us to Pancreatic Cancer Center at Virginia Mason in Seattle. Here we found a knowledgeable and empathetic physician and crew of support professionals in whom we have confidence and trust.
This was Memorial Day. We went in for endoscopy and they found blockages between GI and pancreas and liver. They put in stents, ablated nerves and looked around. Good news was Grady had some of pain relief and some appetite returned. Bad news -he had to start cancer treatment, so the team put in a port and started chemotherapy on Monday, June 12.
We are buoyed by the optimism of our health care team, our many friends and loving extended family.
That's the story. We welcome friends and family who are concerned about us and who may use this site to keep current with our progress. At this point we are enjoying phone calls, emails and visits as well as comments left in the journal.
