George Cooney was born in 1934 in South Amboy, NJ. He has had a very full life with his beautiful wife Joan. Together they raised five children, including their special needs son John. During George’s career as a Systems Engineer, he, Joan and their children lived in New Jersey, Texas, Connecticut, and Michigan. George and Joan have enjoyed travels throughout the United States and abroad. For the past 30 years, George and Joan have resided in Royal Oak, Michigan. They live in a charming condominium neighborhood and are surrounded by many caring neighbors. They are involved with several church communities and volunteer organizations. George is a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, Godfather, cousin, and friend. He is the beloved patriarch of the Cooney family. George was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure in 2017 with few symptoms. However, last August he started to experience significant shortness of breath. It was discovered that the Mitral valve in his heart was leaking severely. This past April, he made the decision to undergo a procedure to repair his Mitral valve. The doctor attempted to place a clip on the valve to stop the leak. Unfortunately, and with great disappointment for all, the procedure was not successful. George’s health has declined rapidly since then. His legs developed severe edema. His kidney function levels increased and he had to stop taking diuretics. He developed a hematoma in his groin area and had to have outpatient surgery to drain it. George has now decided not to pursue additional treatments or a second attempt at the Mitraclip procedure. He has requested to enter into Hospice care. Please keep our family in your prayers during this difficult time. We will continue to care well for George and Joan in their condo. George and Joan are still managing to enjoy the summer months with lots of warmth and sun. They have a strong faith which is helping us greatly at this time.
