In October in 2019, our friend Gary was diagnosed with a grade-III anaplastic astrocytoma of the right temporal lobe. In laymen's terms, he had a tumor the size of a walnut in his front right brain. Based on his MRI in January, the neurosurgeon told him the tumor wasn't growing, so they could watch it for a bit. The plan was to biopsy it in April. But as the saying goes, life is what happens when you’re making plans. In March, Gary had a grand mal seizure, sending him to the ER, and eventually to CU Anschutz Hospital for emergency surgery. After 5 hours of awake surgery, the doctors had to stop for Gary’s wellbeing. It was decided to treat the tumor that remained with radiation and chemo. In true Gary fashion, he completed 3+ months of that grueling treatment like a champ.
On July 29th, Gary experienced another unforeseeable grand mal seizure and was rushed back to the ER. It was decided to place him in a medically-induced coma for 11 days to prevent additional seizures. When he was taken off the medicine to bring him out of the coma, he was left with several complications including a pulmonary embolism and blood clots in his right arm. To help him recover from the reduced mobility and speech impairment, he has been admitted to a care facility in Northern Colorado where he can get all the treatment he needs.
Now for the good news - both Gary’s neurosurgeon and oncologist have reviewed his latest scans and both have confirmed that his results look great, with no new growth, and no lesions. Now we need everyone’s help to get Gary back on his feet, back to his adoring family, and back on the golf course he loves.
If you believe in a higher power, include Gary in your prayers. Or, keep this positive thought in your mind - GARY GETS WELL! (Chanting it as I type!) And if you are so inclined, add your own positive energy to this site. The family will be sure to read him your well-wishes, positive stories, and of course, an exaggerated account of your current golf game – “Acromites” and all.
Check back here often for updates on his progress. At least once per week, an update will be posted. And feel free to send a link to this site to any and all family and friends who are interested. Together, we will get the big man back on his feet!
