Ezra Quail Ezra’s New Kidney

First post: May 24, 2019 Latest post: May 24, 2019
Ezra Quail was born with ARPKD, it’s short for Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease. ARPKD is a rare condition affecting 1 in 20,000 live births, boys and girls equally. It causes enlarged kidneys (with or without cysts), liver enlargement and high blood pressure. Eventually, children with ARPKD will need a life saving kidney and or liver transplant. Ezra has battled this disease since birth, his parents were told he would not survive for more than a few hours after he was born. He’s now 17,  a junior in high school and is in the final stages of kidney failure and will be getting a kidney from his dad, Shane, on May 24th at the University of Minnesota children’s hospital. Ezra will approximately be in the hospital for 8-12 days post-transplant and will be staying in Minnesota for up to 12 weeks with his mom, Denelle, while he recovers and is closely watched for rejection. Shane will be in the hospital 2-4 days after donating his kidney and will have a 6 week recovery.  Ezra has been amazingly strong his entire life as he battled this terrible disease. We’re so excited to see Ezra have energy, an appetite and a chance to finally feel great.
