Our second child, Eva Jean, has arrived! Eva was prenatally diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome after the sonographer discovered there was something wrong with Eva’s heart at our 20-week ultrasound. This essentially means that only the right side of her heart is pumping blood like it should. It’s very rare and 35 years ago all babies with this condition would die, but they’ve developed a series of three surgeries that should save her life.
Eva was born on August 3rd, and had her first open heart surgery five days later. The next few months are really critical, and she will be super fragile until they can perform the next surgery when she is 4-6 months old. After that, they’ve told us that she should stabilize and life can be somewhat normal for all of us until her (hopefully) final surgery at 2-4 years old.
After much research, talking to medical folks, and a lot of questions and tears, we're taking things one day at a time and one step at a time. We'll update this site as we learn more so everyone knows what's going on!
