On December 31st, Emmie and her best friend were hit by a car while crossing the street in a crosswalk on N. Estes Drive in Chapel Hill near our home. She suffered fractures to her femur, clavicle, and pelvis. The main concern, however, is a serious brain injury. Emmie was placed on a ventilator with endotracheal intubation and emergency surgery was performed to relieve the pressure on her brain at the University of North Carolina Children's Hospital. The surgery was a success and relieved the brain swelling which is now no longer considered to be a serious threat to her survival. She remains in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and is unresponsive due to the brain injury.
