Elizabeth is one of the most loving, giving, inspirational beings I have ever known! I am not kidding. Her humble philosophy of life is based on giving and paying it forward, which she finds a way to do, quietly, everyday. Now, she is about to embark on the ultimate gift, a decision she made, without hesitation: donating a kidney to her brother, Jim ... offering him a second chance at life!
This past Labor Day, I was blessed to join her for a family reunion in Yucaipa, California. What a wonderful clan! It was an memorable celebration for many reasons. One such highlight, was meeting her youngest brother, his wife, and 3 of their 4 sons. Like Elizabeth, Jim is a 3rd generation barber ... a sweet heart of a man, a loving husband and father, a dutiful son, and, like Elizabeth, a stalwart in all aspects of life. Unfortunately, Jim suffers from an autoimmune disease that continues to diminish his kidney function, hence the need for a transplant. While it was wonderful to be a part of this reunion celebration, I couldn't help but feel the familial cloud of concern for Jim's health.
The good news was, this same trip was also slotted for Elizabeth to begin the testing process at Scripps Green Hospital, in LaJolla, California, to determine whether she was a match for Jim! What an education. What dedication and surrender to the process, with finally good news arriving on October 20th ... she is a match!
Their surgeries are scheduled for December 12th and there are 3 necessary operating rooms. One for her, one for him and a 3rd for the quarterbacking doctor who receives the kidney! As her friend and an adopted member of her family, I am asking for your prayers: for the medical team, for Jim and for Elizabeth.
