Summary

Elizabeth Clare was born on 8/21/17 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA. About two weeks before birth we found out she had fluid buildup in her chest cavity around her right lung (pleural effusion) and edema under the skin around her skull. This means she had hydrops (fluid in more than one body cavity) which carries a 50-90% mortality rate. Sarah went into preterm labor the evening of August 20th. Doctors performed a c-section in the early morning of August 21st. Upon delivery she was not breathing, not moving, completely purple/blue and had a very low heart rate. She had 21 minutes of chest compressions. During these first 21 minutes after birth, she was given six shots of epinephrine; fluid in her chest was drained; and seconds before the doctor was going to stop working on her, her heart rate came up. Soon after she began breathing, she was baptized and confirmed by the hospital chaplain, Fr. Stefan Starzynski.

After birth she had no movement. Doctors believed she was brain dead, but her EEG on her second day was normal. Shocking to everyone, she has had two subsequent normal EEG’s and a normal brain MRI. In the last six weeks she has made much improvement with her movement. She was born with hands and feet badly contracted. Her hands appear almost normal now. Movement from neck down is normal, but she does not swallow or gag, move facial muscles, nor do her eyes move normally or blink. She does open and close her eyes but not very often. Her eyes have recently started moving some, and her pupils do react to light.

Until this week we thought she could hear. We thought she could see as well but just could not move the eyes. On Tuesday the eye doctor told us she saw no response to light (squinting, moving the eyes away from light, etc. Nor did her heart rate become elevated which would be expected in response to the light). The doctor could not say with certainty Elizabeth was blind, but it seemed like a disconnection between the structurally normal eyes and the brain (i.e. Damage to optic nerve). On Wednesday, she had a comprehensive hearing test where they measure the brain's response to sound. Doctors, nurses and we had all previously believed she could hear fine. However the test showed profound hearing loss in both ears (no response to sound at even the highest level), effectively a diagnosis of deafness very possibly accompanied by blindness.

All of her current issues seem to deal with the cranial nerves. There are twelve cranial nerves, and we are uncertain any of them are working properly or at all. They deal with sending signals to the brain from the eyes, ears, nose, facial muscles, swallowing, gag reflex, etc. It is likewise uncertain whether this resulted from the lack of oxygen at birth or present in utero. The original hydrops diagnosis has been cleared as she no longer has the fluid buildup. She is still intubated as she has heavy secretions due to the lack of swallowing and gag reflex, causing an inability to clear her throat or to sneeze, though she is breathing on her own over a ventilator.

On October 5, our family decided to pray for a miraculous healing for Elizabeth, specifically through the intercession of the Servant of God Father Walter J. Ciszek, SJ. We are aware he is in need of a miracle for his Cause of Canonization to continue, and we are hopeful that Elizabeth will be the recipient of that miracle; thus confirming what we already know to be true; that Fr. Walter Ciszek is in heaven interceding for those of us still on Earth while enjoying the fullness of the Beatific Vision. As such:

Specifically through the intercession of Fr. Walter J. Ciszek, SJ, we pray to Almighty God for the miraculous healing of Baby Elizabeth Clare Doyle, particularly in the areas of her eyesight, hearing, swallowing/gag reflex, and other cranial nerve damage.
