In 2014, Elaine was diagnosed with breast cancer. It had not spread to other parts of the body, and she had surgery to remove the tumor, as well as radiation and chemotherapy to reduce the risk of recurrence. At every check up after that, she seemed to be doing fine. In May 2017, she began to feel extremely weak and fatigued and had difficulty eating. A CT scan showed multiple masses in her liver, and the biopsy revealed that her breast cancer had returned with a vengeance.
