As you likely know, Elaine is fighting a very rare cancer - Thymoma - that originates in the thymus gland under the breastbone. Her cancer is considered stage IV since it has spread to the pleura (lining) of her left lung and around her heart. Typically, the cancer requires surgical removal (resection) and a combination of other therapies (chemo, radiation, etc.) to keep it in check.
Since discovering this cancer in May of 2015 (shortness of breath on long walks and weight loss were the only symptoms), she has had a VATS (video assisted surgery) for biopsy and a regime of chemotherapy but has not been a candidate for the surgery. She and her physicians in Dayton and Indianapolis are working hard to define a treatment plan for her.
