Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Bill has been having issues with his liver since he was knocked into an ice bank last Feb, helping a stuck car out of the snow. He wound up in the hospital for 11 days as we found out he had developed serious liver disease over the years and this injury tipped the scales against us. In fact his liver was failing.
Fast forward to now: He went to the ER in Sault Ste Marie, MI two weeks ago to get some tests done so we could see how much damage there was and so we could evaluate how to treat him best. They ended up transporting Bill to M Health University of Minnesota Medical Center, 9 hours away, by ambulance overnight. Megan and I made the 11 hour drive passing through Houghton to board our cats. Bill was there for a week while they stabilized him. He was released last Friday and we (Megan and I) drove him 6 hours back to our house in Houghton, Michigan on Saturday. We arrived around 8pm. At 4am Sunday morning Bill woke up with a very high fever. I took him to the ER in Calumet, MI and Bill was transported by air back to the hospital in Minnesota. Megan and I got a few hours sleep and drove back to Minnesota Monday. We have been at the hospital since while Megan and I look for suitable temporary living arrangements as it is clear that Bill cannot live so far away from medical help. Bill was listed on the Liver Transplant list yesterday. He needs a new liver to survive. We received word this morning that there is a match and we are getting ready for transplant surgery, which is currently scheduled for 5am tomorrow.
We have set up this site so I can keep you all updated in one place as there are so many of you and only 3 of us. One who will be unavailable for a while.
