2020 was a hard year for the entire world, especially for health care workers, like Dorothy.   During the pandemic Dorothy was thrust into various stressful nursing  staffing positions. Dorothy stepped up as a front line healthcare worker by caring for Covid Positive patients and filling in for other departments to help cover shifts. She was selfless and cared for so many people during this difficult time.
Dorothy was excited to receive the vaccine as she was eager to return to normalcy.  Unfortunately, this would be the beginning of one of the most difficult challenges she would face.  Dorothy experienced swollen lymph nodes, days after the Covid vaccine; a typical side effect. Using her medical judgement, she decided to be examined further. She began with doctor’s visits which led to mammograms, ultrasounds and eventually a Biopsy.   After much worry and many sleepless nights, Dorothy’s fear was confirmed when she learned that she had Breast Cancer; Stage 2 grade 3 Triple-Negative Breast Cancer on March 2, 2021.  This particular cancer is aggressive and can spread quickly to other parts of the body.  Triple-negative breast cancer does not respond to hormonal therapy medicines and is typically treated with a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.  Dorothy has been on a very emotional roller coaster since being diagnosed,  however on March 12, 2021 she received news that her cancer HAS NOT spread to her organs.  Dorothy caught it EARLY!

With this being  said, she has a long journey ahead of her.  She will begin by undergoing 16 weeks of chemotherapy that will take place  once every two weeks. Following Chemotherapy, she will undergo surgery, followed by additional Chemotherapy and radiation.   All of her care and treatment will be done at Northwestern University: she is in great hands!  This CaringBridge page will be used to keep family and friends updated through Dorothy’s journey.

I know everyone wants to help in any way they can, and I cannot express enough gratitude. I have Included a MEAL TRAIN link below, with additional donation options.
