Welcome to Dorit's site! Becca here, hoping to get info to as many people as possible in the simplest fashion. Below, you will find the background of what's going on with Dorit and what comes next.
In mid-February, Dorit had a terrible bout of abdominal pain that led to an ER visit and ultimately a visit to a gastroenterologist. He found that she had a narrowing in her colon as well as a small mass. That mass has turned out to be positive for cancer (adenocarcinoma). These tests were all done in Naples, but once it became clear that she would need surgery, she flew back home to Minnesota for further care.
We met with the surgeon and the oncologist at HCMC today. Though all are hopeful that the cancer hasn't spread, we won't know for sure until they take it out. So, this Friday, March 20th, Dorit will be heading into surgery to have a section of the colon removed. She will likely be in the hospital for 3-5 days afterward. We are very aware of the horrible timing this presents with the pandemic, but the surgeon is hoping to get her in and out of the hospital before beds become too tight. He worried that a delay would possibly turn into a 2-3 month wait, which he very much wanted to avoid.
So, that's where things stand. I will try to make the medical jargon understandable here, but feel free to ask questions here or text me. Dorit has been pretty worn out by this whole ordeal and has no appetite whatsoever, making it hard to keep her energy up. She welcomes your calls and your texts, but please understand if she doesn't pick up or answer back right away. She mostly just wants to rest and then get on with it!
I will add more as there is more to know. Thank you all for your love and support!
