In the early morning of Wednesday, January 11, I found Donny by the fireplace. He was confused, unsteady, couldn't complete a sentence, and was smelling some awful smell that wasn't actually there. I took him to the Emergency Room in Grand Rapids where they ran some tests and arranged to have us fly to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. When we arrived Don had a seizure which led to the discovery of a brain tumor. After a few days to recover in intensive care, he had a brain biopsy which confirmed the diagnosis. It is a Stage 3, inoperable tumor. After 11 days in the hospital we drove home. We are in phone contact with his Care Team daily who help us adjust to and understand Don's recovery process.
Donny will be treated with six weeks of chemo and radiation. The chemo is in pill form, and radiation will be in Hibbing, MN. Two weeks after the chemo and radiation finish, we will travel back to Abbott Northwestern for an MRI to see how the tumor responded to treatment.
