On Friday, July 21, 2017, don was doing what he loves to do. He was working along side his wife, Rae. In an attempt to slow down and downsize, he was determined to clean up his dump truck, trailer and backhoe and put it for sale. He towed the equipment to the DQ in Columbiana, which is owed by his daughter and son in law. The idea was to wash it all up and put it for sale on a new piece of property that his daughter and son in law purchased at the corner of State Rt. 7 & 14. Don was up on the trailer pressure washing the backhoe. He stepped backward in an effort to get more "cord" and somehow tripped over . He lost his balance and fell backward head over heels and landed on his head. Rae witnessed his fall and saw his neck bend in all kinds of directions as his head and neck took the impact. his feet flipped over top of his head and he landed, face down unconscious and unresponsive for a short while. When Rae got him to respond, he initially did not have feeling below his waist, and then, below his neck. Rae went to the DQ for help. The kids at the DQ called 911, and Columbiana EMS was dispatched. Don was transported by ambulance to Mercy Health, St Elizabeth's trauma. CAT scans, MRIs and X-rays followed. DR. Kholi was the neurosurgeon on call. He evaluated everything and determined that he broke his C1, C2, and 5,6 and 7, he also severed a vertebral artery in the fall. Don was shipped off to the surgical intensive care unit.
