Hi All! Thanks for joining us on this journey. As most of you know, my older brother, Dick, has been struggling with health issues for at least the last 4 years. In Nov. of 2013, he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke on the right side of his brain that left him unimpaired physically, but damaged cognitively. He was still quite capable of managing daily life, but no longer able to deductively reason, (think: use computer, remotes, cell phones, etc.). Basically he lost the ability to figure anything out. Of course, this necessitated the closing of his life-long business, Autoball and left him without a reason to get up everyday. The stroke also affected impulses, moods, etc. and thus we found ourselves with a new brother/husband/father/grandfather. His stubborn nature was unaffected and his decision to up and move to Texas was the beginning of quite a story. I will spare you the details, but during the 2 3/4 years he lived out there, he continued to experience occasional 'events' which were diagnosed by some as TIA's, but others as seizures. and as such he was medicated an told he could never drive again. He also divorced, re-married and divorced again. Fast forward to Sept.2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall only a few miles north of where he lived in TX & his Senior Living Residence was damaged. As a result he was moved to a sister facility in Charlotte, Brookdale Carriage Club and has been living there independently since October. His son, Andy & his wife Jena have become his primary caretakers.
