In 2016, Derrith and I were looking forward to Dennis' upcoming retirement from the Military, where we could finally settle down on one location. We had decided where we were going to move, Dennis had started looking for jobs and networking, and the kids were excited to finally land in one place they could call home. In February 2016, after a standard Colonoscopy, we found out Derrith had cancer in her colon and surrounding lymph nodes. Luckily for us, we had been living in Mankato, MN, just an hours drive from one of the best cancer treatment centers in the US, Mayo. Derrith had surgery at Mayo after under going several months of chemo. After the surgery, we believed and prayed we were in the clear. In December of 2016, we found out her cancer had spread to her liver. The doctors operated on her again to remove the tumor after undergoing 2 months of chemo prior to the surgery. After her recovery from surgery, we found out in Feb of 2017, that two more tumors were found in her liver and the doctors immediately began another two month of chemo, with the hopes of stabilizing the tumors over about a 6 month period, with the goal of removing or freezing or burning them (ablation) in September 2017. Through it all, we have leaned heavily on our strong Christian faith and amazing friends and family for support. The out pouring of love has been tremendous and really a testament to the wonderful people we have had the privilege to get know.
