August 2010, Derek had surgery for a brain tumor. Low Grade Glioma Astrocytoma, 7cm x 6cm x 5cm, right side, 2/3 fontal lobe, 1/3 temporal lobe and inside the brain. Two days later, he had massive swelling, second surgery to remove bone plate, drug induced coma for 8 days, ICU 10 days, hospital 5 days, inpatient rehab center for 10 days, surgery to put bone plate back in. Out patient physical therapy, occupational therapy and cognitive/speech therapy for 7 months. For the past seven years he has been dealing with the after math of the brain trauma. His “new normal” has been daily seizures, constant headache pain, has to nap every day, and he suffers with depression, anxiety, emotions and short term memory.

November 13, 2017, Derek will go back into surgery to remove more of the tumor. 10% is left.
