.On 1/16/17 Derek was burning something on the ranch and for some reason there was some sort of an explosion which caused Derek to be burned. He was burnt on 50% of his body. His most severe burns are on his right hand, right arm, chest and back. He was transported by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center of Fresno Burn Unit. Fortunately Derek's prognosis is good, he is in critical condition but is currently stable. Derek was placed in a medically induced coma and intubated which will keep his airway from closing from swelling. Although Derek is heavily medicated, he is very aware of his pain and is responsive to commands. He will need to return to surgery on Thursday for further evaluation of the burns to the right arm and hand. His lungs were NOT burnt, but did have soot in them. I will continue to update this page daily as we know Derek's progress. Please continue to pray for Derek and Amber and the children at this time. Specifically pray for Derek's physical and emotional health, and that as infection tries to take over his body, it will not invade his blood stream. (we were told that all patients with large burns get infection at some point) Amber was told that Derek would probably be in the hospital for 6 months. The children are not allowed to see him in the burn unit any of this time. Please pray for Kason as he will probably not understand why he cannot see his daddy during this time. Pray for Amber as she settles into as much of a new pattern as one can in this situation. Rylie is just 4 months old and needs a lot of attention from mommy as does Kason. Kason is aware that his daddy is in the hospital but does not know specifics, so we ask that people be very careful when talking around Kason because he is listening to EVERYTHING. He is being very brave and giving his mommy lots of hugs. As most of you know, Derek just recovered from a traumatic fracture to his leg. He worked very hard to keep his ranches going during that time and worked very hard at the recovery of his leg. He was looking forward to going back to work. Derek is also a guy that does not sit still for long and loves to be outdoors. This process will not only be physically hard, but emotionally hard as well.
