Welcome to Derek's CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most. Here is a synopsis of what is going on.

On February 17, 2016, Derek was diagnosed with Classical Hodgkins Lymphoma (nodular sclerosing). Everything had started a few months earlier when he was having problems with breathing through his nose and constantly sounding like he had a cold. Derek went to see a doctor and was referred to ears, nose and throat (ENT). The ENT doctor noticed that his adenoid (behind his nose) was enlarged. On February 1, Derek had surgery for biopsy and to significantly reduce the mass in his nose. He could breath through his nose again immediately following surgery. He absolutely thrilled to be able to do that again! The biopsy was analyzed by pathology here in La Crosse as well as in Rochester (care is through Mayo).

We received the diagnosis on February 17th the same day that we met with the radiology oncologists (Dr. Stockham) and medical oncologist (Dr. Gill). Since meeting with the oncologists, Derek had a series of appointments, including a bone marrow biopsy, over the last week and half leading up to the start of chemotherapy on February 26, 2016.
