In September, 2017, our mother was rushed to the hospital complaining of a pain in her left chest. What we feared was a heart condition of some type, but what was found was far, far worse. After months of visits, driving 5 hours for each, we finally had an answer. Stage 4 small-cell carcinoma. She had lung cancer and it was a devastating blow. With this type of cancer, there is no cure and even treating it with chemo, radiation, or both would only buy a few months at best. We've decided to finish out her life in the way she wants, by doing things and seeing things rather than stuck at home in a bed dealing with the harsh effects of cancer treatments. The cancer will run its course and at some time this year, she will pass from this life leaving her two sons with the memories of our adventures together.
