12+  years ago I started to have pain on my left side, which proceeded down my left side.  Yes the sciatica nerve was being pinched at L4 -L5 from the degeneration of my lower spine.  Dr. Robinson here in Stuart set me off on a plan to wait at least 10 years for surgery to repair this area.  Well when in his office a couple of years ago the X-Ray revealed that late onset scoliosis had set was affecting my spine and sending it in the opposite direction of the degeneration. Long story short, I've been seeking the best medical care for the surgery.  Mayo Clinic Jacksonville neurosurgeons agreed that the best surgeon to operate on my spine was at UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Dr. Christopher Shaffery  is my neurosurgeon and I'm very confident that he and his staff will take very good care of me.  He will be inserting 2 titanium rods starting at T-7 and go to the base of the spine.  They will anchor the rods to each side of my pelvis bones.  Sounds simple....right?  Well he performs 250 surgeries annually and has great results.  The surgery is normally 10 hours, but Dr. Shaffery performs this surgery in 6 hours, which is great.  That is still a long time to be under anesthesia but it is better than 10 hours!
