Here's what's happening... Mom was diagnosed in February with terminal non-small cell lung cancer (non-squamous variety). The cancer has spread from her right lung into her brain (she has two small tumors, one at the base of her brain & one in her frontal lobe), into her throat (she has a tumor on the side of her neck that is beginning to wrap around to the front), into her lymph nodes, into her adrenal glands and into her right hip bone. Since the cancer has metastasized so significantly, treatment options are limited. Her cancer is not curable so the focus is on pain management. There will not be any chemo or radiation.
If this is the first you are hearing about this, I apologize for being so clinical. This has been an incredibly difficult journey for her, as well as for the rest of the family. One of the ways Alison & I manage is to focus on gathering information so the best decisions can be made. We are super grateful for our Uncle Nick (Deb's brother) who has unfortunately managed other recent losses in our family. Uncle Nick, Alison & I have been handling things together.
At this point, mom is able to live independently with hospice visiting three times a week. As this changes, Alison and I will take turns staying with mom so that she can be at home with her dog (Charlie) and in-home hospice care. She has chosen to stay at home if at all possible and we will honor her decision to the best of our abilities. Right now, mom chooses when she takes phone calls as this has been understandably overwhelming. She has been struggling with the computer so she may not answer e-mails. You are welcome to reach out to her or send her a card.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and think about my mom for a few minutes. This is a rough road. We appreciate your positive energy.
