Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place as Debbie fights Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Be aware that Tributes (donations) on this site go to "CaringBridge" and not to the family. If you would to support the family in more direct ways than you see here, please call/text Katie at 540-533-5112.

On September 17, 2020, Debbie went to the Winchester Medical Center emergency room due to a painful abscess where she was admitted for surgery. After the operation, it was discovered that she has Type II Diabetes that affected her body’s response to fighting the infection. Days went by as doctors worked to get her levels back to normal and to continue to heal. She spiked a fever while her white and red blood cell counts dropped. Tests were run continually to determine where the problem was.

After 5 days of going in for a simple surgery, blood culture test results revealed that she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Debbie was transported to University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA for more direct and personal care where she remains. Because of her low white and red blood cell counts, each day she has been given IV antibiotics and blood transfusions. She contracted pneumonia as her immune system became weaker. So far Debbie has undergone the original abscess surgery with continuous wound care, a bronchoscopy to get a specimen from her lungs to help treat the pneumonia, and a bone marrow biopsy that confirmed the diagnosis of Leukemia. Currently she is receiving aggressive chemotherapy that will destroy the Leukemia and also her body's ability to fight infection. The next phase will be for her body to regenerate healthy white blood cells.

Thank you on behalf of the Moss family. We are deeply touched by your kind and thoughtful outreach. Things have changed quite a bit from just a week ago--a new turn in our journey. We are a family of faith with a foundation in our Heavenly Father.  We believe God uses people to accomplish His desires, and His desire for us is love and joy in our spirit. You have brought God’s blessings to us and continue to be His messengers of hope. Thank you. Debbie, Rob, Katie, and Laura are focused on the walk ahead. Good to know we don’t travel alone.

We encourage you to write well wishes to Debbie. You can browse this site if you would like to support us in other ways.
