Dave was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease (HD) in 2005 when he was 21 years old. HD causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain and individuals experience problems with thinking, behavior, and movements. Symptoms usually worsen over the course of 10 to 25 years. Despite participating in experimental trials, medications and multiple therapies, there is no cure for Dave. The symptoms of HD are sometimes described as having ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s – simultaneously. The loss of a loved one with HD is a very slow and painful process.
On July 30th, Dave & Laura made the incredibly difficult decision to move Dave from their home into a care facility. With much effort Dave is still able to verbally communicate his needs, however his abilities are changing each day. Access to around the clock care will help Dave as his needs evolve.
