Dante Dalla Libera

“There's a certain grace in accepting what your life is and embracing all the good things that have been - but there's still an expectation of good things to come. Not necessarily what you expected.”

― Emmylou Harris

When first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July, Dante
resolved to seek treatment and fight it as best he could. He underwent his
first treatment on August 2. According to his oncologist, he unknowingly had a
gene mutation that made him unable to metabolize the chemo drug Fluoroluracil
(5FU) which was the principal drug in his cancer treatment. It caused his side
effects to be seriously acute and spun his already thin and weakened body into
a downward spiral. He fought hard and heroically, but his body refused to
cooperate. On Thursday morning, August 25, the ICU doctor and nurse
practitioner informed us that he was entering major organ failure and there was
nothing more they could do. He passed on that Thursday at 4:30 on the dot,
typically the time of his first scotch of the day. Apparently the bar in heaven
had opened and happy hour was underway.

He was an amazingly beautiful person who never met a
stranger, never forgot a joke, who loved scotch, children and animals. He remembered
every single detail that I taught him concerning vineyard practices and
winemaking, and he was my right hand man working beside me in the winery. I
will miss terribly his love and support and our shared passion for winemaking. His
incredible sense of humor impacted everyone around him, and kept me laughing
through our mutual experiences, good and bad. I am truly blessed to have shared
a portion of my time here on earth with him. Dante, you will always be loved
and absolutely never forgotten.

Donations made in his memory will be used to offset his
