I am a good friend of the Hey family and will use Caring Bridge as a place to post updates on Dan's medical journey. In September, Dan was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. This is a type of blood cancer affecting the plasma cells (a type of white blood cell) in the bone marrow. It can damage the bones, immune system, kidney's and red blood cells.
Dan, along with his wife Mindi and daughter Alana, have been true fighters of this cancer. Dan has been in and out of the hospital since September, with his most recent stay at about 5 weeks now. The medical team has made every effort to get this cancer under control. Unfortunately, after discussions with his family, the medical team and the palliative care team, it was determined that Dan will be placed on Hospice in a facility for hospice patients who require a higher level of skilled care to manage symptoms and pain.
