Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

First, Important Thank-Yous:  Everyone has been so supportive and caring, and we are immensely grateful for all of you.  Dan is (and I am) lucky to have you all in our lives.  Thank you to our families, to all our friends, to co-workers (old and new), and to the doctors, nurses, therapists and everyone else caring for Dan.  You all contribute to Dan's recovery, whether by checking in on both of us, helping to keep Dan's extended friends and family informed, taking care of our dogs, helping with Dan's condo, insurance, etc.,  sending love, and so many more ways.  We couldn't have gotten this far without you, and we want to say thanks in advance for all of your support through the coming weeks and months.  Saying "thanks" doesn't seem to be enough.....

The Basics (as of 7/25/17):  Dan was in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, 7/16, on Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay.  He suffered several broken/fractured bones (right side of his body) and a head injury (he is conscious and talking, and sounding like himself, but he has a fair bit of memory loss).  He was brought to Stanford Hospital by helicopter and was treated in the emergency room for a while.  He had surgery on Monday, 7/17, to reconstruct his right hip socket and fix his femur dislocation, and the doctors said that the surgery went very well.  He was in ICU until the evening of Tuesday, 7/18, when he was moved to a regular trauma unit.  He is pretty banged up, but he gets better every day.  We are optimistic about his recovery, though it will take time and a lot of rehab.  More details and updates to come in the journal updates below.

The Bottom Line:  For being unlucky enough to have a bad motorcycle accident, Dan was actually extremely lucky.

Hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe.

With love and gratitude,
Dan & Heather (Dan's girlfriend)

P.S.  We know that there are some texts and calls to which we have not responded, and we apologize for that.  Please know that we still really appreciate your care and concern, and we will try to answer over time.

P.P.S.  I want Dan's rehab room to be filled with support and love, so I brought in a few pictures, but Dan doesn't have a lot of pictures around.  If you have a picture of you with Dan (or even just of you), I would be grateful if you could post below in the well wishes feature on this website or email it to pixforberge@gmail.com  We will print and put up the pictures in his room.  Thanks!!!  Heather
