Cooper was born on January 19, 2017 at 8:19 pm weighing in at 6 lb, 14 oz and 20 in long. At 5 days old, Cooper was sent to the emergency room for treatment of possible dehydration and jaundice. Once admitted into the emergency room, the doctors realized he had a much more serious condition. Cooper was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called coarctation of the aorta (visit
https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/health/c/coarctation for a detailed description of this condition). His body was in shock when we arrived, because he had lost blood flow to the lower portion of his body and his organs were in distress. Once the doctors were able to reinstate blood flow, his organs received the blood they needed to recover. It took approximately a week for his kidneys, liver, and GI system to recover. His lungs still need improvement before he can have surgery.
