The best way to tell Coley's story might be to begin with the email we sent to our church family on July 7th:
Good afternoon church family. I am writing this to you to update you on what’s been going on with our family in recent days. Coley presented some troubling symptoms for a few days, so we took him to the doctor yesterday afternoon. After a blood test they immediately sent us to the hospital. After running additional tests there, we were transferred to UNC—where we are now. The doctors have confirmed that Coley has leukemia. Needless to say, we are devastated by this news, but Coley really has done such a great job so far. He’s been stronger than mama and daddy over the last 24 hours. I’m so proud of him. At this time, he knows a bit of what’s ahead for him. We’re trying to explain things to him bit by bit. The doctors are still determining the specific kind of leukemia, which will dictate the plans for his treatment. Every situation is different, but thankfully the doctors seem optimistic overall because of his age and the type of cancer. But we should know more about the overall prognosis tonight.
We want to thank you all for praying for him. Please keep praying. That’s what we need more than anything right now. We are truly grateful to be part of the HBC family. We have already begun to feel the warmth of your love. Feel free to text or email us. The communication we’ve already received from some of you has meant the world to us. It really has. Knowing we are loved by Christ and his church does bring us peace.
We will update you as things move along in the coming days and weeks. I love you all.
