Welcome to Clare's CaringBridge website.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

As some of you know, after a fun-filled summer of travels to Iceland, the Baltic and a week at Hogwarts (just kidding  it was ChristChurch College, Oxford), Clare experienced some dizziness and speech difficulties while on a final summer trip to Frisco, Colorado. A preliminary evaluation suggested a meningioma, which is a benign, slow-growing tumor on the lining of the brain.  It was pressing against her speech center causing slurred speech and the inability to complete sentences.  No Pink Ladies were involved!

Clare was treated with steroids in Denver to reduce the pressure on her brain that was causing her symptoms, and she and Cal flew home to Dallas on Tuesday 8/27.  They met with a neurosurgeon the next day and scheduled surgery to remove the tumor for Tuesday, September 3.

On Friday, 8/30, however, Clare experienced extreme weakness on her left side.  She was admitted to the hospital for observation and tests.  The tests confirmed that she had suffered a stroke on the right side of her brain (in a different location than the tumor) and will need some time to recover from the stroke before the tumor can be removed.  Fortunately, the blood vessel related to the stroke symptoms is very small and generally heals more quickly than if a larger vessel were involved.

You will not be surprised to know that Clare has been upbeat, brave and feisty, but right now, she needs her rest.

We deeply appreciate your prayers and concern, and invite you to check back regularly for updates on her condition.

With thanks,
The Chaney Family
