Hello friends and family. Welcome to our Caring Bridge website. We are using this space to share updates on Christian's medical condition in one place. We so appreciate your continued prayers, encouragement and support. Thank you for visiting...
For nearly two years since Christian's diagnosis of Glioblastoma IV - brain cancer - we've been in forward motion on a seemingly never ending roller coaster -- working a plan set forth by an incredible team of dedicated medical professionals and supported by a loving community of friends and family. We've been living in the moment - day by day, and living life fully as schedules of two active teenagers and two adult professionals don't stop!
Since August of 2015, we've maintained a positive outlook and we have counted our many, many blessings. Christian has been an inspiration to us all, enduring surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, and the newly FDA approved Optune therapy.
His spirit has remained positive as diligently we educated ourselves on a topic never before considered: how to survive a diagnosis of brain cancer.
Christian has surprised his medical team over and over again with healthy reports, lab results, MRI readings, strength rebuilding and his overall positive outlook.
While we knew that a reoccurance was highly likely, in fact, inevitable, with each passing month as he moved further away from the initial diagnosis and experienced month after month of progressive health improvement, we began to fall into a comfortable routine of our 'new normal' and felt that he was going to be the one to beat the odds...
And he has... month after month ... until just two weeks ago when symptoms returned prompting an expedited MRI which revealed what we were always half expecting to hear but to date had not yet heard: there has been a reoccurance. The tumor has become active again and in less than three months has grown to the size at the time of original diagnosis.
It's June 11th and a new chapter begins. Round Two. To follow the next chapter in Christian's journey, please read on to the journal posts which follow...
With love, the Slater Family Christian, Wendy, Ariana and Willem
