Charlie Kenneth Howard was born on April 18, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. He weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and was 20 inches long. His delivery and birth went perfectly! Halle and Ethan were very excited and yet anxious for his arrival....
At Halle's 20 week ultrasound appointment, the baby was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). HLHS is a severe congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. There are a series of three reconstructive operations to repair HLHS - the Norwood, Glenn and Fontan procedures - known as "Staged Reconstruction".
