Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting. This has been one bumpy, incredible journey to get to this point in our lives. About ten years ago, Charlie was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), which is a hereditary disease which causes large cysts to develop on the kidneys. Normally this runs in families, but thankfully nobody else tested positive for the disease! Over the years, the cysts have taken over and replaced the healthy kidney tissue and Charlie was placed on the transplant list a year ago when his kidney function dropped below 15%. We made the trip to OHSU last July to do the transplant intake which consisted of two full days of education and testing. Charlie passed everything with flying colors, thankfully he is completely healthy other than his kidneys are failing. The last thing he needed to do was to see a neurologist for a "little something" they found on the MRI on his brain. So July to October, we waited, not knowing what this "little something" was, but it was something we had to have looked at. Come to find out, Charlie had a large basal aneurysm which had to be repaired. He had surgery in October where the surgeon was able to go in through his groin and repair the aneurysm using titanium coils and stints. Then we waited...six months. In the mean time, I was tested to be a donor for Charlie. Incredibly, we had three of six markers in common and are an amazing match. How cool is that?! So this is our story. The transplant is scheduled for May 9th at OHSU. Charlies surgeon is Dr. Berry, who has been doing transplants for 40 years and has done almost 2500 transplants in his career! We are so fortunate and feel that we could not be in better hands. I have created this page as a way for our family and friends to stay connected and updated while we take this journey. We could not do this without your love and support! -Leslie
